Not ready for table food?

Not ready for table food?

Postby actressdancer » Thu Jul 22, 2010 9:05 am

I've been introducing pureed veggies for about a month. Micah, who will be 7 months tomorrow, still has the thrust reflex. He eventually swallows some, but not before most of it comes back out of his mouth over and over and over. I know having the thrust reflex is a sign they aren't ready for table foods, so I try to give him 'food' about twice a week, testing to see if he's 'over it' yet. He doesn't even suck the spoon.

Last night my mom said that I should be giving him foods everyday so he learns what to do with them. But everything I read says that if they thrust it back out, don't give them more. I'm so confused. He has all the other readiness signs.

My other three boys gobbled up the purees right from the first time they were introduced, so this is new territory for me (as are most things with Micah. lol).

What would you do?

I should also add that he REALLY WANTS food. Like, he gets overly excited when I try to feed him a little something and screams like a mad-man when I stop. So it's not a matter of taste or anything.

Does he have a pincer reflex? If so, I'd probably offer small bits of very soft squishy foods (avocado, banana, well cooked sweet potato) and let him entertain himself. Very little will get in his mouth, but he'll likely be perfectly content.

Hmm. That's a good idea. He does have the pincer thing down pat. I bet he's like some avacado.

Maybe put the spoon further back in the mouth? I did that with panda so she wouldn't push the food out with her tongue.

Along the same lines as what Michelle mentioned, we did baby-led solids with Annalee and it worked great for her:

All of my children really wasn't interested in food until 9mths and then it was slow going. Even now my 1.5yo prefers baby food type food(puree) over table food.

I don't worry about it. It all works out-truly it does :-)
